About The Exhibition Machine Learning for Culture

On the 14th of December 2021, Art Gallery Line opened an exhibition for the project “Machine Learning for Culture” created and lead by Nicoloz Tbileli. The Project “Machine Learning for Culture” utilizes AI technologies to bring back to life historic Black & White pictures and remarkable Movie Scenes presented in colorized format.

As Nicoloz told us “Machine Learning For Culture is intended to create awareness and link to our histories. For today it’s hard to neglect the ever-growing forces of globalization and the fluidity of culture it brought upon. And this whirlwind of innovation has in some ways created a disconnect between people and their cultural heritage and identity.””

For this project, Nicoloz and the team at alt mind started working on a custom AI pipeline and modules in late 2019 . And in the final two years, Nicoloz reworked and updated the pipeline to enhance the results and the vibrancy of colors.

When asked what was the inspiration for the project Nicoloz stated that “As innovators and developers, one of our core beliefs is that we should always preserve the past and respect it. For culture isn’t just a novelty its the core of who we are, where we are coming from, and what unities as all.
With this project, we see a great opportunity to not only increase appreciation for cultural heritage but a great new way to increase awareness and interest in tech and the scientific field.”

He also stated that this is just the start of the project and that they are actively looking and are in talks with different organizations all over the world to preserve and bring to the forefront the value of culture and the ways we can improve our awareness

Whats Planned Next

When asked what is the plan for this project Nicoloz Tbileli said that at the moment he is working on creating a book that would encompass the recolored historical photos from 18th-19th century Tbilisi that the team restored. The working name for the book is “Colors of Tbilisi” which will mainly focus on the views of Tbilisi captured by old masters of photography like Dimitry Ermakov, Alexander Engel, Dimitri Nikitin, Constantin Zanis, and many others.
