About the Artist:
Gia Japaridze is a world-renowned Georgian sculptor and artist born on May 5, 1945. He currently resides and works in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he has been awarded the titles of Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi and Mtskheta, as well as Cavalier of the Order of Honor. His sculptures, both large and small, can be found in collections around the world, including those of Juan Carlos I of Spain, Jimmy Carter, John Paul II, and the Vatican.
Japaridze has been the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Russian Federation State Prize in 1990 and the title of “People’s Artist of Russia” in 1993. In 2007, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice Biennale. His sculptures can be found in public spaces around the world, including in front of Moscow’s Pushkin Museum and Moscow State University, the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, and Central Park in New York City.
Japaridze’s sculptures are known for their expressive volumes, rich texture, and vibrant colors. His early works were primarily abstract, influenced by cubism, expressionism, and surrealism.
