About Amiran Kuprava

Amiran Kuprava is a Georgian artist known for his minimalist, monochrome or duochrome portraits in a variety of media, including oil on canvas, oil on cardboard, oil on net, acrylic on net, oil on oilcloth, wood sculptures, and installations. Born on January 5, 1955, in Poti, Georgia, Kuprava studied at the Tbilisi Iakob Nikoladze Art School from 1972 to 1975, followed by the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts from 1982 to 1988, and the House of Painters Studio in 1989-1990.

In 1993, Kuprava moved to Berlin, Germany, where he lived and worked for the next 20 years, exhibiting his work in solo and group shows in Germany and Georgia. He returned to Tbilisi in 2013, and in 2015, he held his largest solo exhibition at the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Kuprava’s earlier works from 2007 showcase his portraits predominantly in oil on canvas, such as ‘Sophie,’ ‘Wolf Rider,’ ‘Medea,’ and ‘Red.’ In 2013, he continued with oil on canvas or oil on veneer, with works such as ‘Marquee Women,’ ‘Portrait on Diagonal,’ ‘Infanta,’ ‘Gaze,’ and ‘Portrait on Light Blue Background.’ In 2014, he experimented with oil on net and acrylic on net, which resulted in works such as ‘Rene’s Mood,’ ‘Woman Sphinx,’ ‘Surprise,’ ‘Strange Bird,’ and ‘Irao.’ From 2015, he diversified his style further, incorporating a variety of media, such as veneer, oil on canvas, oil on net, oil on cardboard, and cloth.

Kuprava’s works can be found in public collections, such as the Tbilisi National Museum and the Batumi Art Museum, as well as private collections in cities such as Tbilisi, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Moscow, Munich, Konstanz, Mining, Berlin, Brussels, Barcelona, Madrid, Oslo, and Hamburg. Kuprava’s Metamorphoses exhibition, with around 70 paintings and 30 small-scale sculptures, displays his versatility and evolution as an artist over the years.
