On the 23rd of May, a momentous event unfolded at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as the Artcross Foundation, in collaboration with Art Gallery Line and the Embassy of Georgia in the United States, proudly hosted the grand opening of the esteemed project “Rooted in Culture.” This cultural exchange initiative aims to showcase the contemporary art and abundant culture of Georgia, strengthening the profound and enduring connections between Georgia and the United States. The exhibition, which made its debut in Tbilisi, Georgia, on May 5, 2023, before gracing Washington, D.C., on May 23, 2023, commemorates Georgian Independence Day and highlights the works of 25 distinguished Georgian artists.

The inception of the “Rooted in Culture” project by the Art Cross Foundation marks a moment of jubilation, emphasizing the profound significance of cultural exchange in fostering unity between nations. The exhibition boasts a remarkable list of contemporary artists, including Dima Antadze, Dato Aptsiauri, Alex Berdysheff, Nino Gogolashvili, Gela Dumbadze, Mamuka Didebashvili, Otar Vepkhvadze, Giorgi Vepkhvadze, Levan Vardosanidze, Sergo Tbileli, Gogita Toidze, Amiran Kuprava, Mamuka Mikeladze, Tamar Minashvili, Dato Popiashvili, Maya Ramishvili, Gia Revazi, Temo Tailuri, Tamar Shashiashvili, and Gia Japaridze. The exhibition in Washington, D.C., drew a crowd of 1000 attendees, further highlighting the growing interest in Georgian art and culture.

A Cross-Continental Journey:

The “Rooted in Culture” project commenced in the enchanting city of Tbilisi, Georgia, captivating audiences with its diverse and thought-provoking artworks. The transition to Washington, D.C., signified the intricate and profound interconnections between the two nations, rooted in a shared appreciation for art and culture. The celebration also paid tribute to contemporary Georgian art and culture, with distinguished guests in attendance.

The exhibition offered attendees a rare opportunity to delve into the captivating realm of Georgian contemporary art and aesthetics. As a unique element of the event, famous Georgian artists Sergo Tbileli engaged in a live art performance, painting a traditional Georgian wine vessel called “Qvevri.” This symbolic act not only paid homage to Georgia’s venerable traditions but also served as a reminder of the deep-rooted connection between art and culture.

In addition to the contemporary artworks, the exhibition featured a special presentation of historical photographs of old Tbilisi, dating back 120 years. These fascinating images were colorized using artificial intelligence, bringing to life the vibrant past of the city and providing a glimpse into Georgia’s rich history.
